Summer Music Camp

The Department of Music and the Community Music Center at Union University held their ninth annual Summer Music Camp this week. This camp for children grades 1-8 provides performance opportunities with expert clinicians, exposure to a wide variety of musical experiences, and a week of fun with friends.

All students sing in either the 1-5 grade or 6-8 grade choir, rehearsing several times during each day of camp. In addition, the younger students have a myriad of musical experiences with xylophones, handbells, piano, world drumming and beginning strings. Older students also participate in a variety of musical experiences in small groups including handbells, guitar, and technology.

Below are some photos of the many activities that camp participants enjoy throughout the week.

Another successful Summer Music Camp wraps up today. The Department of Music has enjoyed teaching kids of all ages about music this week through choir and instrumental classes. It has been a wonderful week, and the students will practice what they’ve learned during a concert this evening for their friends and family.

Robotics and Programming Lego Mindstorms Summer Camp

Several departments and athletic teams across campus host camps throughout the summer for local children of all ages. One example is the Robotics and Programming camp that the department of computer science organizes. Jan Wilms, department chair, started the camp seven years ago and modeled it after a camp that the physics department was doing back then. “Our department had purchased Lego Robotics kits for our Intro to Computer Science class, and they were perfect for an outreach program to middle schoolers to get them involved in science and technology,” Wilms said.

Lego Mindstorms programming interface The camp has been going on this week from 1-4pm each day. Camper Jake Lancaster said, “I like Lego camp because it’s very entertaining to program and drive the robots, and it’s fun to meet new friends.” The camp mixes fun and games with challenges like line following, maze traversal and races with the robots. Everything is built on a foundation of engineering principles and programming concepts. Wilms explains, “The kids learn about differential gears and Ackerman steering but also about advanced programming like multithreading and event-driven programming. This is possible because Lego makes available a visual programming language that is very user friendly, and the immediate feedback that the robots provide encourages trial-and-error and hones debugging skills. We even use some trigonometry that the younger ones haven’t learned yet in school, and they don’t seem to mind because it is directly applicable to getting the robot to cover the desired distance.”

Lego Mindstorms robot built at the camp Several of the campers have attended consecutive years as the camp offers something different each summer. There are many different designs available for the robots that are fun for the campers to build and test.

“Our hope is that this will inspire the kids to continue their passion and choose a career in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field,” says Wilms. We’ve enjoyed having these campers here all week!Camper working on his robot Dr. Wilms troubleshooting with a camper Campers testing their program A camper working on his robot Dr. Wilms troubleshooting a programming issue with a student

Department of Music Hosts Children’s Summer Camp

For the past several years, the Department of Music has hosted a popular summer camp for children in grades 1-8. The department has worked with over 140 students this past week for the 2014 camp. Each year the children are divided into groups based on their ages, and they participate in choir as well as learn a variety of instruments. Activities and lessons included music technology, xylophone, handbells, piano, movement, recorder, beginning strings and guitar. This is a great summer activity to get children excited about music and the arts! Keep an eye on our Summers page next spring in order to sign up for camp early. Spots tend to fill quickly.

Summer Sports Camps at Union University

Each summer at Union University, there are various summer camps taught by our coaches and athletic teams. Options include baseball, basketball, cheer, soccer, softball and volleyball. Several of the camps took place during the month of June, but there are still opportunities to sign up for the full week boarding basketball camp, several different soccer camps, softball boarding camp and volleyball camp. For more information about each of these, visit uuathletics.com/camps.

These camps are an excellent way to teach children the fundamentals of these sports, but it also serves as a way to teach them the importance of teamwork. Other non-athletic camps and classes can be found here: uu.edu/summers.
